A conjunction is a word that connects words, phrases, or clauses. Conjunctions are the glue that holds sentences together.

Without Conjunctions (Choppy)

  • I like coffee. I like tea. I don't like milk.

With Conjunctions (Fluent)

  • I like coffee and tea, but I don't like milk.

The Three Main Types

| Type | Purpose | Examples | | ------------- | --------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------- | | Coordinating | Connect equal parts | and, but, or, so, yet, for, nor | | Subordinating | Connect dependent + independent clauses | because, although, if, when, while | | Correlative | Paired connectors | either...or, neither...nor, both...and |

Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS)

These connect equal words, phrases, or clauses.

| Letter | Word | Function | | ------ | ------- | -------------------- | | F | For | reason (because) | | A | And | addition | | N | Nor | negative addition | | B | But | contrast | | O | Or | choice / alternative | | Y | Yet | contrast (stronger) | | S | So | result |

Subordinating Conjunctions

These connect a dependent clause (incomplete thought) to an independent clause (complete thought).

  • Because it was raining, I stayed home.
  • I called her although I was busy.
  • If you study, you will pass.

Correlative Conjunctions

These work in pairs to connect equal elements.

  • Either you come with us or you stay here.
  • Both the teacher and the student were happy.

Why Conjunctions Matter

  • Fluency: Short choppy sentences become smooth flowing ones.
  • Complexity: Express cause, contrast, condition, and time.
  • Clarity: Show relationships between ideas.
