Action verbs describe something the subject does — either physically or mentally.
Physical action verbs involve movement or activity you can observe:
- run, jump, eat, write, build, carry, push, throw
Mental action verbs describe thoughts, feelings, or cognitive processes:
- think, believe, know, understand, remember, imagine, consider
Examples:
- "She painted a picture." — physical action
- "I believe you." — mental action
- "They built a house." — physical action
- "He understands the problem." — mental action
Action verbs can be transitive (they take a direct object) or intransitive (they do not). We will explore this distinction in a later article.
