adjective (noun): a word that describes, identifies, or quantifies a noun or pronoun.

The simple definition is: a describing word. Here are some examples:

  • opinion: beautiful, difficult, amazing, terrible
  • size: big, small, tall, short
  • colour: red, blue, dark, light
  • shape: round, square, flat

Just like nouns, you can often recognize an adjective by its ending. There are certain word suffixes that usually show a word is an adjective:

  • -ful → beautiful, careful
  • -less → careless, endless
  • -ive → creative, expensive
  • -ous → dangerous, nervous
  • -al → educational, national

Note: Not all adjectives have these endings (e.g., tall, short, red). In those cases, you must look at what the word is doing in the sentence.
