The simple past and past continuous help us talk about the past. Knowing when to use each tense makes your storytelling clearer.

Simple Past

Use the simple past for:

  • Completed actions: "I walked to school yesterday."
  • Sequences of events: "She woke up, ate breakfast, and left."
  • Past states: "He lived in Paris for five years."

Form: verb + -ed (regular) or an irregular past form.

| Type | Base | Past | Example | | --------- | ----- | ------- | ----------------------------- | | Regular | walk | walked | "I walked home." | | Regular | study | studied | "She studied hard." | | Irregular | go | went | "They went to the beach." | | Irregular | eat | ate | "He ate dinner early." |

Signal words: yesterday, last night, last week, ago, in 2010, then

Past Continuous

Use the past continuous for:

  • Actions in progress at a specific past time: "At 8 pm, I was watching TV."
  • Background actions in stories: "The sun was shining and birds were singing."
  • Interrupted actions: "I was having a shower when the phone rang."

Form: was / were + verb-ing

| Subject | Verb | Example | | ----------------- | ------------ | ---------------------------------------------- | | I / He / She / It | was working | "She was working at 5 pm." | | You / We / They | were working | "We were working when it started to rain." |

Signal words: while, at 5 pm yesterday, when, as

Interrupted Actions

The most common use of the past continuous is to set the scene for an interruption:

"I was walking home when I saw an accident." "They were having dinner when the lights went out." "He was sleeping while the children played."

The longer action (past continuous) is interrupted by a shorter action (simple past).

Regular vs Irregular Verbs

Regular verbs add -ed (walk → walked, play → played). Irregular verbs change form — you must memorise them:

| Base | Past | | ---- | ---- | | go | went | | have | had | | do | did | | see | saw | | take | took | | make | made |

Practice combining both tenses to describe what was happening when something else occurred.
