The Period (Full Stop)

The period (called a full stop in British English) is the most basic punctuation mark. It has one main job: to end a declarative sentence.

  • _The sun rises in the east . _
  • _She walked to the store . _
  • _I enjoy reading books . _

Do not use a period after:

  • Questions: What time is it? (Use a question mark.)
  • Exclamations: Watch out! (Use an exclamation mark.)
  • Headlines, titles, or labels: Chapter 1: Introduction (Often omitted.)

The Comma

The comma indicates a short pause in a sentence. It has several important uses.

1. Separating items in a list: Use commas to separate three or more items in a series.

  • I bought apples, oranges, bananas, and grapes. (Oxford comma included)
  • She is smart, kind, and funny.

2. Joining independent clauses: Use a comma before a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, so, yet, for, nor) when joining two complete sentences.

  • I wanted to go out, but it was raining.
  • She studied hard, so she passed the exam.

3. After introductory elements: Use a comma after introductory words, phrases, or clauses.

  • However, I disagree with your conclusion.
  • After the meeting ended, we went for lunch.
  • Well, that is an interesting point.

4. Setting off non-essential information: Use commas to set off information that is not essential to the meaning of the sentence.

  • My brother, who lives in London, is a doctor. (The clause adds extra information.)
  • The Eiffel Tower, which is in Paris, is beautiful.

Common Comma Errors:

  • Comma splice: I like coffee, I drink it every day. ❌ (Use a period or semicolon instead.)
  • Missing comma in a list: I like apples oranges and bananas.
