verb (noun): a word that describes an action, occurrence, or state of being.
Every complete sentence needs a verb. The verb tells us what the subject does or what state it is in. Without a verb, you do not have a sentence — only a fragment.
Verbs fall into three core types:
- Action verbs — show physical or mental actions (run, think, build)
- Linking verbs — connect the subject to a description (be, seem, become)
- Auxiliary verbs — help the main verb express tense, mood, or voice (have, do, will)
Here are examples of each type:
- "She runs every morning." — action verb
- "They are happy." — linking verb
- "He has finished." — auxiliary verb
In the coming articles we will explore each type in detail.
