Conjunctive adverbs connect independent clauses and show the relationship between ideas. They are essential for academic and formal writing.

Common Conjunctive Adverbs by Function

Punctuation Rules

Conjunctive adverbs are not true conjunctions. They require specific punctuation.

Between two independent clauses: Use a semicolon before and a comma after.

  • She was tired; however, she kept working.
  • The experiment failed; therefore, we need to try again.
  • He is qualified; moreover, he has years of experience.

At the beginning of a sentence: Use a comma after.

  • However, the results were inconclusive.
  • Nevertheless, we decided to proceed.

In the middle of a clause: Use commas around it.

  • The project, however, was not completed on time.
  • The theory, consequently, had to be revised.
