When two things are not equal, we have a few specific structures to show that one has a lower degree of a quality than the other.
1. Not as... as
To say things are unequal, you can make the equality structure negative. This means the first subject has less of the quality than the second subject.
- This test is not as difficult as the last one.
- It is not as cold as yesterday.
2. Using "Less" (Comparing two things)
Instead of saying something has more of a quality, we can say it has less. Rule: We generally only use "less" with multi-syllable adjectives.
- This movie is less interesting than the book.
- Flying is less dangerous than driving.
3. Using "The Least" (Comparing three or more things)
When comparing three or more things to find the one with the lowest degree of a quality, we use the least.
- Out of all the cars, this is the least expensive option.
- That was the least helpful advice I have ever received.
