Conditional conjunctions introduce a condition that must be met for something else to happen.

If (General Condition)

"If" is the most common conditional conjunction. It introduces a possible condition and its result.

  • If it rains, we will stay inside.
  • If you study, you will pass.
  • I will go if you come with me.

If Clauses in Different Tenses

Zero conditional (general truth): if + present, present.

  • If you heat ice, it melts.

First conditional (real future): if + present, will + base.

  • If it rains, I will stay home.

Second conditional (unreal present): if + past, would + base.

  • If I had money, I would travel.

Unless (If Not)

"Unless" means "if not" or "except if." It states the only condition that could prevent something.

  • I will go unless it rains. (= if it does not rain)
  • Unless you study, you will fail. (= if you do not study)
  • She won't come unless you invite her.

Unless vs. If not: "Unless" cannot be used for unreal (hypothetical) conditions.

  • Correct: Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus. (real)
  • Incorrect: Unless I were rich, I would buy a car. (unreal — use "If I were rich")

Even if (Strong Condition)

"Even if" means "despite the condition" or "whether or not." The result happens regardless of the condition.

  • Even if it rains, we will go outside.
  • Even if I studied all night, I wouldn't pass. (hypothetical)
  • I love you even if you make mistakes.

If vs. Even if:

  • If you study, you will pass. (studying → passing)
  • Even if you study, you might not pass. (studying does not guarantee passing)

Comparison Table

| Conjunction | Meaning | Example | | ----------- | --------------------- | -------------------------------------------- | | if | possible condition | If you work hard, you will succeed. | | unless | if not | Unless you work hard, you won't succeed. | | even if | despite the condition | Even if you work hard, you may fail. |
