Past modals let us make guesses, express regret, or talk about possibilities about past events. The structure is modal + have + past participle.

Levels of Certainty

| Modal | Certainty | Meaning | Example | | ---------------------------------------------- | ------------- | --------------------- | ---------------------------------------- | | must have | ~99% | logical conclusion | She must have forgotten the meeting. | | could have / may have / might have | ~50% | possible past | He might have missed the train. | | can't have / couldn't have | ~99% negative | logical impossibility | They can't have left already. |

The ground is wet. It must have rained last night. He is not answering. He might have gone to bed. She left only five minutes ago. She can't have arrived yet.

Should Have — Past Regret or Criticism

Should have / ought to have + past participle expresses that something was a good idea but did not happen (or a bad idea that did happen).

| Structure | Meaning | Example | | ------------------------- | ---------------------- | ----------------------------------- | | should have + p.p. | regret about not doing | I should have studied more. | | shouldn't have + p.p. | regret about doing | I shouldn't have eaten so much. |

You should have told me earlier. (You did not tell me.) She shouldn't have quit her job. (She quit and it was a mistake.)

Could Have — Missed Opportunities

Could have + past participle expresses that something was possible but did not happen.

I could have become a professional musician. (I had the talent but did not pursue it.) We could have taken the train. It would have been faster.

Comparison Table

| Modal | Degree of certainty | Example | | --------------- | ---------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- | | must have | certain (positive) | He must have finished — his light is off. | | can't have | certain (negative) | He can't have finished — he only started an hour ago. | | may have | possible | She may have missed the call. | | might have | less possible | She might have missed the call. | | could have | possible / missed opp. | She could have taken a taxi. | | should have | regret / criticism | She should have taken a taxi. |

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping have: ~~He must seen the message.~~ → He must have seen the message.
  • Using must not instead of can't for negative deduction: ~~He must not be at home (present, possible) vs He must not have been at home (past) — but for certainty: ~~He mustn't have done it.~~ → He can't have done it.
  • Using should have + base verb instead of past participle: ~~You should have go.~~ → You should have gone.
  • Confusing could have (past possibility) with could (past ability): I could swim when I was five (ability) vs I could have swum faster (missed opportunity).
