English has several ways to talk about the future. The most common are will and going to. They are not always interchangeable.

Will

Use will for:

  • Spontaneous decisions: "I'll take the blue one."
  • Promises and offers: "I'll help you with your bags."
  • Predictions based on opinion: "I think it will rain tomorrow."
  • Facts about the future: "The event will start at 8 pm."

Form: will + base verb

"She will call you later." "We will not (won't) be late."

Going To

Use going to for:

  • Planned intentions: "I'm going to travel to Japan next year."
  • Predictions based on evidence: "Look at those clouds — it's going to rain."
  • Decisions already made: "They're going to buy a new house."

Form: am / is / are + going to + base verb

"He is going to study medicine." "We are going to move next month."

Comparison Table

| Situation | Will | Going To | | --------------------- | ------------------------- | ---------------------------- | | Spontaneous decision | "I'll answer the phone!" | — | | Planned intention | — | "I'm going to start a blog." | | Prediction (opinion) | "It will be a great day." | — | | Prediction (evidence) | — | "It's going to snow." | | Promise | "I'll always love you." | — |

Other Future Forms

Present Continuous for Fixed Arrangements

Use the present continuous for plans with a definite time and place:

"I am meeting my boss at 3 pm." "We are flying to London on Friday."

Present Simple for Schedules

Use the simple present for timetables and schedules:

"The train leaves at 7 am." "The store opens at 9 am tomorrow."

Choose will for unplanned decisions and opinion-based predictions. Choose going to for pre-planned intentions and evidence-based predictions.
