What is the Definite Article?

The word "the" is one of the most common words in English. It is our only definite article.

We use "the" when the listener or reader already knows exactly which person, thing, or place we are talking about. It makes a noun specific.

Rule 1: Specific or Previously Mentioned Nouns

Use "the" when you have already mentioned the noun, or when it is obvious which one you mean.

  • I bought a book yesterday. The book is about history. (Second mention)
  • Could you please shut the door? (It is obvious which door because there is only one in the room.)
  • Where is the bathroom?

Rule 2: Unique Objects

Use "the" when there is only one of something in the world or in that specific context.

  • The sun is very bright today.
  • Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.
  • Who is the president of France?

Rule 3: Superlatives

Always use "the" before superlative adjectives (e.g., biggest, fastest, best).

  • She is the tallest girl in our class.
  • This is the worst movie I have ever seen.
  • Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth.

When NOT to use "The"

Do not use "the" with plural or uncountable nouns when talking about things in general.

  • I love music. (NOT: I love the music.)
  • Apples are good for you. (NOT: The apples are good for you.)
