What Is a Pronoun?

2 min read

A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun or a noun phrase to avoid repetition. Instead of saying the same noun again and again, we use a pronoun.

Without Pronouns (Repetitive)

  • Maria is a doctor. Maria works at the hospital. I saw Maria yesterday.

With Pronouns (Natural)

  • Maria is a doctor. She works at the hospital. I saw her yesterday.

What Is an Antecedent?

The antecedent is the noun that the pronoun refers to. Every pronoun should have a clear antecedent.

| Sentence | Antecedent | Pronoun | | ---------------------------------------------- | ---------- | ------- | | John loves his dog. | John | his | | The students said they were ready. | students | they | | My sister is kind. She helps everyone. | my sister | she |

Why Pronouns Matter

  • Fluency: Speech flows naturally without repeating nouns.
  • Clarity: Pronouns make it clear who or what we are talking about.
  • Efficiency: Shorter, more direct sentences.
