We can often recognize an adjective by its position in the sentence. Adjectives generally appear in two places:

1. Before a Noun (Attributive)

The most common position for an adjective is directly before the noun it is describing.

  • The blue car.
  • A beautiful day.
  • Those tall students.

2. After a Linking Verb (Predicative)

Adjectives can also be placed after a linking verb. Linking verbs do not show action; instead, they connect the subject to its description. Common linking verbs include be, seem, look, feel, taste, smell, sound.

  • The car is blue.
  • The day seems beautiful.
  • The students look tall.
  • This soup tastes salty.
