Conjunctions and prepositions are among the most frequently tested grammar points on the TOEIC exam. In Part 5 (Incomplete Sentences), you will often need to choose the correct conjunction or preposition to complete a sentence accurately.
Why Conjunctions & Prepositions Matter in TOEIC
The TOEIC exam tests your ability to understand relationships between ideas in business and workplace contexts. Conjunctions show how clauses connect (although, therefore, moreover), while prepositions show relationships between nouns and other words (regarding, despite, within).
Common traps include:
- Confusing similar prepositions: depend on vs. depend from (only on is correct)
- Choosing the wrong conjunction: although vs. despite (different grammatical structures)
- Misusing correlative conjunctions: neither...nor vs. either...or
