Action verbs describe something the subject does — either physically or mentally.

Physical action verbs involve movement or activity you can observe:

  • run, jump, eat, write, build, carry, push, throw

Mental action verbs describe thoughts, feelings, or cognitive processes:

  • think, believe, know, understand, remember, imagine, consider

Examples:

  • "She painted a picture." — physical action
  • "I believe you." — mental action
  • "They built a house." — physical action
  • "He understands the problem." — mental action

Action verbs can be transitive (they take a direct object) or intransitive (they do not). We will explore this distinction in a later article.
