A strong command of academic verbs is essential for achieving a Band 7, 8, or 9 in the IELTS exam. While many students focus on nouns and adjectives, precise verb choice directly impacts your Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range scores.

Why Verbs Matter in IELTS

In both Academic Writing Task 1 (describing data trends) and Task 2 (writing an academic essay), the verbs you choose determine how sophisticated your writing sounds. Instead of go up, a Band 8 student uses increase, rise, or surge. Instead of say, they use assert, contend, or demonstrate.

The examiner looks for:

  • Variety — using a range of verbs rather than repeating the same ones
  • Precision — choosing the verb that exactly matches the meaning
  • Collocation — pairing verbs naturally with nouns (reach a conclusion, conduct research)

Topics in This Series

  • Academic Reporting Verbs — verbs for Task 2 essays (assert, claim, demonstrate, refute)
  • Trend Verbs — verbs for Task 1 data descriptions (increase, decline, fluctuate, stabilize)
  • Formality Register — choosing the right verb for academic vs. general contexts
