English adverbs fall into five main categories. Each answers a different question about the action.
1. Adverbs of Manner
Tell how an action happens. Usually end in -ly.
- She spoke quietly.
- He drove carefully.
- The children played happily.
2. Adverbs of Time
Tell when an action happens.
- I will call you later.
- She arrived yesterday.
- They are leaving now.
3. Adverbs of Place
Tell where an action happens.
- Please sit here.
- The cat is hiding inside.
- I looked everywhere.
4. Adverbs of Degree
Tell to what extent or how much.
- It is very cold.
- She is quite tall.
- I am almost finished.
5. Adverbs of Frequency
Tell how often an action happens.
- She always arrives on time.
- He never eats meat.
- They sometimes visit us.
