The past perfect and future perfect let you express the order of events across time. They show that one action was — or will be — completed before another.

Past Perfect

had + past participle

Use the past perfect to show an action completed before another past action:

"When I arrived, she had left." "They had already eaten by the time we got there."

Signal Words

  • already: "I had already finished when he called."
  • just: "She had just left."
  • never: "He had never seen snow before."
  • by the time: "By the time we arrived, the show had started."

Common Pattern

[Past perfect] + when / by the time + [simple past] "I had brushed my teeth when the power went out."

Future Perfect

will have + past participle

Use the future perfect to show an action that will be completed before a future time:

"By next year, I will have graduated." "She will have finished the report by Friday."

Signal Words

  • by: "We will have driven 500 km by noon."
  • by the time: "By the time you arrive, I will have cleaned the house."
  • in: "I will have saved enough in three months."

Examples

"In 2030, they will have lived here for twenty years." "He will have completed the project by the deadline."

Comparing All Perfect Tenses

| Tense | Form | Example | Meaning | | --------------- | ----------------- | ----------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ | | Present Perfect | have / has + p.p. | "I have visited Japan." | Experience up to now | | Past Perfect | had + p.p. | "I had visited Japan before I moved there." | Completed before another past action | | Future Perfect | will have + p.p. | "By 2030, I will have visited Japan twice." | Completed before a future time |

The perfect tenses all express a relationship between two points in time. The auxiliary verb (have, had, will have) tells you which time frame the speaker is referring to.
